The story is about a cat named Rocky who wanted to be a boxer. She and her three brothers decided to enter a local talents show … This brave cat inspired everyone around her to believe in themselves and to reach for their dreams. She made such an impact on the community that she inspired everyone around her.
Very cute artwork. Adorable cat and beautiful color work.
Unfortunately, the text treatment leaves a bit to be desired. The title is long and unwieldy, and keeping it in one font/size doesn’t really work. While grammatically correct, the comma after “Rocky” interrupts the flow of the title. The separation could have been better accomplished by using a different font, a larger font size, or even all caps.
The artwork and layout in this book is GORGEOUS. There’s so much attention to detail all throughout – it’s an obvious labor of love. Even the page numbers have been stylized beautifully!
The color work is wonderful. I had so much fun looking at the pictures that I forgot to read the text! I had to go back through the book a second time to read the story.
Very cute story with a lovely message. I loved brave little Rocky!
I do think a final editing pass might have been useful though. I noticed a number of grammatical errors as well as other discrepancies (i.e. names: “Mrs. Witherspoon” vs. “Mrs. Whiterspoon”).
About the Author
Anita Hager (1980-) is a mother of two who lives in a small cozy town in Norway. She and her husband also share their home with four cats. Her imaginative and meaningful children’s stories follow in the tradition of her Grandmother who read to her when she was a little girl. Now Anita reads her own stories to her two little boys at night and has decided to share them with others. You will see her love of animals reflected on each page as well as her dream to help children grow up knowing how special they are. She has created The Be the Magic you Are series of books for children. Books with stories that inspire children to be the magic they are by being themselves and reaching for their dreams. Most of the stories are based on animal characters that combine great stories with great illustrations. Her first children’s storybook, entitled Luke – the Horse who Wanted to be a Unicorn, is about a spotted horse, Luke, who is ashamed of his spots and dreams of becoming a unicorn – only to discover that it is best to be himself. The book is about self-acceptance, which is important for children to learn at an early age. In fact, it’s important for everyone to learn! Her saying is “Be yourself and you are always a unicorn! Be the magic you are!”
