Franny the Fearless Firefly

Christina Murphey

I enjoyed the alliteration. It’s not overdone, and it adds a fun element to the story. The story itself was cute and fun. The writing was age-appropriate, with just enough to stretch a young reader’s vocabulary.

Fun, bright, and full of interesting details. I quite enjoyed how the illustrator captured all the various expressions of the little fireflies.

While the artwork is cute and colorful, the cover design falls flat. Authors can sometimes illustrate their own books (and vice versa), but it takes a bit more know-how to craft a successful, effective cover. In this case, the text treatment is weak – and the title is way too small. The artwork is cute (as mentioned), but compared to the rest of the book, it’s lackluster, with no detail or visual interest.
